Well, some kids are still the same. While babysitting my grandson recently, I was watching him play by himself out in the backyard. I was curious because he had been out there by himself for quite awhile. He was hunched over totally absorbed in watching something in the garden - don't know what it was. He then started turning over stones and collecting bugs in a jar, which he set aside. Then he examined the leaves of several plants. Then he took his jar and picked out a certain bug and threw it in the fish pond to feed the fish and brought the rest inside to feed his lizards.
