No, I think you've missed my point. Perhaps you're thinking about a different scale of rewards than I'm thinking about.

If a biotech company could come up with an effective, inexpensive drug to treat colon cancer, let's say, that could potentially save billions of dollars in healthcare costs, nationally, in just a few years.

That biotech company could get one or two billion dollars as a reward. I think that would be sufficient incentive to get private investors to finance the research.

What I'm getting at is trying to come up with some creative way to set up a healthcare system that is not run for profit, while still preserving traditional capitalistic motivations for research.
