Why didn't Obama have the savvy just to say, " I'll comment on the situation when I have all the facts"?

He made a rookie mistake...

I would bet money that the charges were dropped because City politicians got into the act.

Why didn't the police have the guts to stick with the original charge of disturbing the peace?

Neither one of us knows the answer to that question. You think it was due to it being a BS charge. I think it is because politicians got involved....or because the police figured out that this was a friend of Obama's and therefore normal rules do not apply.

I think the important thing to do is look at this as a reasonable person.

If I locked my keys in my home, thus requiring that I break into my own home and someone called 911, when the cops came, I would be more than happy to show identification with a smile. I would appreciate that the police showed up to potentially prevent my home from being robbed. White, Black, Hispanic or Asian, the police had an obligation to verify Gates' identity and right to be in the home.

If it had been someone else breaking into Gates' home and they didn't do anything to stop it, Gates would be claiming racism because the police didn't stop the breaking and entering.

Gates clearly had a chip on his shoulder and was looking for an excuse to cry racism. But the fact is...there is a power shift in the US. Obama is the MAN. And the MAN in the form of the police was just doing his job.

The racists in this situation are Gates and Obama.

oh bummer! The charges may not have stuck but it would cost at least $10,000.00 to defend against them. Don't know how much just to have legal representation at the arraignment hearing. Of course he could surely depend on one of the many black organizations to provided free council. Anyway after the arrest the patrolman actually found out his residence.
