John - you are rational in your arguments and I find you a worthy debater. Ultimately we live in worlds of completely different backgrounds that have resulted in decision making data bases that are different. Only the national experience will show which approach is right.

You, quite obviously, have the right to come to the conclusion that folk cannot discuss issues across experiential boundaries. I simply disagree. Strongly. My life, in certain respects, has been committed to the notion that such debate can and must occur.

The debate about healthcare is a clear for instance. That debate is about national issues, ones in which we all participate. It's not only possible but necessary to think about the issues well beyond the rather narrow scope dictated by "experience." Experience, which is often a surrogate term for social location, is only a starting place, at best. Empathy gets you beyond it. But looking at issues from the perspective of the whole, in so far as you can reach it, is what we all need to do.

No one can object to transparency in government. I gather that's your point. But in the comparative presidents' arguments, Obama comes out extremely well.

As for the speed with wich we reach some sort of economic catastrophe, I see a couple of things. Short term data suggests, thanks largely to Obama's policies we are back off the brink. He should get a " well done" for that. The Reps policies would not only not have done that but would have made the inevitably bad much worse. And their complete unwillingness to help with the heavy lifting, makes it much more difficult now.

As for the long term, the country is clearly on a downward glide. I'm beginning to work hard to understand what it takes to invest in China. Have begun a slow process of dollar cost averaging in.
