Some years ago i saw a documentary on thison i think PBS, focusing on several realife case studies where study starts from where patient is at it's worse.

One was a woman so terrified of spiders she lived as recluse in her home, refusing to go out.
At the end she is letting tarantulas walk on her body and is smiling.
Also a man so afraid of height he could not even ride in car over a bridge,by the end he is standing about a foot from a highcliff's edge(that he had hiked to) and enjoying the beauty of the view.
They dealt withagoraphobia but blast i can't remember how they fixed that, but they did.

But i have tried to imagine myself in Winston Smith's position, even though do NOT have primal fear of rats i know caged starving rats WOULD chew relentlessly on my face, eyes and all,so what would i do in this stuation???
"Winston, who has a primal fear of rats, is shown a wire cage filled with starving rats and told that it will be fitted over his head like a mask, so that when the cage door is opened, the rats will bore into his face until it is stripped to the bone. Just as the cage brushes his cheek, he shouts frantically: 'Do it to Julia!' "

i have thought i would scream what they wanted, and within NOT mean it at all, try to FAKE i was broken, just like CoolHand Luke,in his famous "Yessa Boss, anything you say boss" And wait for my chance for revenge and/or escape.

i myself would immediately forgive a person who betrayed me under relentless torture.

Plus i read words of survivors of torture, that no matter what they might say,the torturers could NOT break them within.

So in truth,i do not believe a person like Winston Smith by screaming "Do it to Julia!" would have been broken, the challenge would have been to afterward make them think he was broken--ala CoolHand Luke--which i was pleased to hear Paul Newman say CHL was his favorite character that he did perform.Max
