It's funny- I thought I had read something recently by Gates. Several months ago I picked up the Bondwoman's Narrative, edited by Gates. He tells the story of how he found the quite extraordinary manuscript- and then presents the narrative.

If you have not read it, I think you might really enjoy it.

Gates is from Jesse Jackson's generation who witnessed segregation and as a result are carrying forward their ill feelings from their experiences. The Generation X (Obama's) is a very different one. They are the beneficiaries of the Civil Rights movement, are well educated and well read.

I am confident that if what happened to Gates happened to someone like Don Lemon (CNN news anchor), Jesse Jackson Jr. or some of the African-American TV talking heads who support Obama, the outcome would have been different.

It would take a complete fadeout of the Jesse Jackson Sr. generation before we can truly claim racial harmony.

Additionally, the police force needs to be better tarined to address verbal abuse. The sergant in this case should have just issued a ticket and walked away.
