Bradley Wiggins came out of nowhere and pulled 4th in the Tour de France. He rides with Garmin Chipotle and they are sponsored by Dr. Sears' Zone Labs. While they can't follow a strict anti-inflammatory diet while riding long distances (carb requirement is simply too high), they do apply the principles to get all the advantages possible.

it has shown up in the results, too. the biggest surprise last year was christian vande velde. pre tour, my cyclist buddy said top 20 would be great for christian. he finished 4th (one guy was ousted for doping).

this year, the surprise of the tour is bradley wiggins. he is looking to come in 4th, too, except this year astana is in the tour and they have an incredible team. so 4th this year is even better than 4th last year.

my friend has concluded that wiggins' performance has to be the result of doping. he doesn't see any other way that a guy like wiggins can "all of a sudden" become one of the best climbers in the world.

garmin is hard core anti-doping and they do lots of tests to ensure their athletes are clean. if he is doping, i hope he gets caught. if not, this is the most incredible compliment he can get - his improvement is so good that people think he has to be doping.

wiggins lost 20 lbs pre tour (Zone Diet - lose weight, increase muscle and performance?) while maintaining or increasing his power output. this rarely happens, but vande velde did it last year and wiggins did it this year. when asked, wiggins credits sticking to a strict diet and training, but they all train, right?

in 2006, wiggins finished 166th in the tour, if i recall correctly.

my body weight bottomed out at 155.5 lbs last year. my low weight now is 166.5 lbs. i should tie last year's best lift of 170 lbs x 8 within 6 weeks, but the big difference now is that my shoulder isn't hurting me every time i lift. last time i lifted 170 lbs x 8, my shoulder gave out on me and i had to sit out for 3 months. i credit my german volume training work for increasing my muscle endurance and strengthening more muscle fibers. i wish i had started out using GVT principles, but live and learn.

my goal is to add 10 lbs of lean muscle mass per year and top out at about 185-190 lbs in 2-3 years. 10 lbs of lean muscle mass has been about what i've been gaining per year and i really have my diet and training dialed in now, so hopefully i can bump that up to 12 or more lbs a year, but i'm not counting on it. i'm the prototype "hard gainer."

i'll chime in again once i get 185 lbs x 8 - hopefully before the end of the year.
