<snip>“This is where all the money is getting made,” said William H. Donaldson, former chairman and chief executive of the New York Stock Exchange and today an adviser to a big hedge fund. “If an individual investor doesn’t have the means to keep up, they’re at a huge disadvantage.”

For most of Wall Street’s history, stock trading was fairly straightforward: buyers and sellers gathered on exchange floors and dickered until they struck a deal. Then, in 1998, the Securities and Exchange Commission authorized electronic exchanges to compete with marketplaces like the New York Stock Exchange. The intent was to open markets to anyone with a desktop computer and a fresh idea.

But as new marketplaces have emerged, PCs have been unable to compete with Wall Street’s computers. Powerful algorithms — “algos,” in industry parlance — execute millions of orders a second and scan dozens of public and private marketplaces simultaneously. They can spot trends before other investors can blink, changing orders and strategies within milliseconds.

This is a look at the SOX stocks over the longer range of 6 weeks in percent terms.

This past week was quite good, but down in performance from the previous week. This is a look at the SOX performance in graphical terms.

Then the SPX chart is shown below

The last 2 weeks had very good price performance, but the volume was not real strong compared to several months ago.

Hi Don,

After grimacing these reports, with my favorite stock holding down the cellar,It now miraculously pops up after reporting a large loss.

BUT with "the trough has been put in" declared by the CEO.

Smaller divisions are strong and expected to be strong next quarter.

I'm now having serious thoughts that you and I should have a buy strategy that parallels the Dogs of the Dow.

One caveat - they must have no debt and trade over 5.

There would be some serious money made over these go no where years.

Thnaks for momentarily rosy recap.<smile>

Bob

P.S. Yes I do still believe Cohu is a screaming value - now that it has regained it old book value!!
