<<<Any homeowner who has a cop show up to make sure his home is not being broken into should be grateful and polite, even in a case of mistaken identity that can be cleared up quickly and easily.>>>

The onus should not be on the homeowner especially when the homeowner has not done anything wrong - criminally.

But we have to examine very carefully the people who are given the authority, especially in this type of situation, to arrest someone in their own homes people who have not done anything wrong.

Not to call in question the behavior of the police officer in this situation is wrong.

It is unfortunate that Obama got caught up in this situation. There is no good way for him to handle this situation. For Obama to back off and start praising this cop, however, sends out a very bad message.

Perhaps Gates was reacting to some medications or something. His behavior certainly appear abnormal for the situation.

He certainly provided a opportunity for Obama to reveal his predisposition and lack of responsibility.

If we do get to something more like a truly postracial world, common sense rules would apply instead:

Who knows. But we are certainly not there in a lot of ways both large and small. This incident is a clear illustration of the problems black males have had, for a long time, on the level of micro interactions. That never get publicized. I just hope one of the narratives out of all this is precisely that.

The Buchanans of the world are clearly going to push much worse ones.
