Here's an interesting take on Obama's initial reaction to the Gates question.

Henry Louis Gates: Déjà Vu All Over Again

Terrific piece from Stanley Fish. Yet one more layer to help folk interpret the Gates' story. All sounds familiar.

It's a great piece of writing. Unfortunately the people who already know the world is that way will read it, and the people who are still saying Obama isn't an American or a Christian, won't- or if they do, they'll just blame liberals for writing such an opinion piece. If they could actually read the piece, without fighting the feelings of the people who live black in America, they'd understand why black Americans vote democrat- because it's not the democrats looking for a black man's birth certificate to prove to themselves he isn't "American" and he doesn't belong in the white house.

What a ridiculous pen of abstract sophistry. Gates was under suspicion because his neighbor made phone call and reported a possible burglary. He was doing his job.

I wonder how the author can explain why the NY Times, Washington Post and other leading newspapers investigated John McCain and his place of birth?
