Gate's house is owned by the university. Got that info from a news story. Gate's made a call when he got home to the university office that does repairs to report his stuck front door that needed repair. It was Gates and his driver trying to force this door open that prompted an alert woman who works in the neighborhood to report a burglary in progress.

The officer was responding to a call of a suspected burglary. He had a DUTY to ascertain who was in the house - Gates or anyone else - and determine their ID.

Gates was offbase from the getgo, telling the officer "No, I will not". and "Why, because I'm a black man in America?" when asked to identify himself and whether anyone else was in the house. He almost immediately dialed the chief of police - Gates is friends with both the mayor and chief of police as well as with the President and reported Sgt. Crowley as a racist cop. He intended to have this white cop punished for having the effrontery to ask HIM questions. "You don't know who you're dealing with," Gates kept telling him.

Gates reacted in a kneejerk racist and arrogant manner when he saw a white cop. The white officer, like the hispanic and black officers that showed up later, was thoroughly professional.

I suppose its a sign of racial progress that a black man can act like an arrogant racist snob, which reminds me of this Onion video:
