Text messages are sent using the SMS (short message service channels) which are also used used to control and supervision of handsets. There is less bandwidth for SMS than for normal voice or data service, so there needs to be some charge to deter overuse - imagine the spam if the cost was lower. The author has no clue. The other comments on pricing are reasonable. The exclusivity deal between Apple and Cingular/AT&T results in 1) AT&T paying more money to Apple and most important 2) AT&T doing what Steve Jobs tells them to do. If Verizon wants to sell the iPhone (rumor is they may get the Mac iTablet), they will need to adjust their network.
