>>Equally? It was entirely the liberal's pet project to have everyone own a home even if they couldn't afford it...<<

the bushevics were every bit as bad - it kept people from being mad about his phony war. remember, compassionate conservatism was tied in with home ownership.

it was the bushevics who sued new york to prevent "ability to repair" from being a loan requirement (i kid you not!).

it was bush who trumped no down payment, bad credit and over extended home ownership.

why blame the homeowner when their dream of a house could be realized without putting much or any money down. The average American is not going to turn down a free lunch.Blame the real estate industry who were able to package these mortgages into a derivative and sell it to the rest of the world. The Lehmans and Bear Stearns of the world were leveraged more than these homeowners .Many people foreclosed on their homes but only Lehman went under........not a level playing field.

I think both parties share plenty of blame. You cannot ignore W's "ownership society," he was part and parcel of the home ownership movement.

en.wikipedia.org

Basically, Clinton started the snowball rolling, and W made the hill steeper so it picked up incredible size and speed.

Congress, of course, both Republican and Democrat during these administrations, had a lot to do with it as well. I agree with you that Dodd and Frank ought to face charges.

We beat this to death (and then some) on the Residential Real Estate Crash thread, and the liberals and conservatives (almost) agree that it was a joint effort.

Now where is the stock market headed today?
