Diamonds are not fungible. They are difficult to evaluate, test and grade. They are also not divisible - you can cut a gold coin into pieces of eight to pay off 8 people, don't try that with a diamond. Also, the market is kept artificially high - See Edward Epstein, the Death of the Diamond, and later works.

They do have the advantage of small space and light weight, easy to travel with and conceal.
