Well I've been able to chkdsk the external drive, and it appears to be repaired, so on with the round!

We're starting to get into territory I don't feel comfortable in. Though I worked with Windows starting in the late 80s (version 2), I have been concentrating on Macs since 2001. Deep Windows tech support is, therefore, not really my area now.

I do think that updating the BIOS on your machine, if Dell's site indicates you need to do so, is probably a good idea. Beyond that, I'm sorry that I don't know what to tell you.
