Even the other cops who were there only heard pieces of the conversation going on in the house between Crowley and Gates. A picture has clearly been emitted from the altercation, and that picture is one of a hothead black racist who jumped to conclusions, and a white officer who followed procedure to the letter. That picture is in your head and only in your head.A black cop and an Hispanic who were present on the seen have totally backed up the white cop's version of events. The white copy was hand-picked because of his track record to train other officers in the area of racial profiling. The "victim", OTOH, has been hand-picked because of his "knowledge" (you could say "memory", which would be accompanied by anger, humiliation, etc.) of every racist event in history. Even if there were no known facts in the case one could have a pretty good idea how things went down. I saw that cop talking to reporters outside his house. He's got a very aggressive and unpleasant side to him as do most cops. You yourself have experienced cops getting aggressive. Gates was you in this exchange except he decided not to back down like you did. That's why I think both sides were in the wrong. But there ARE facts. We know what happened. The officer behaved precisely as officers are required to. The hothead black guy blew up because he incorrectly concluded that he was being "racially profiled", when in fact the officer was there to protect HIM, as the property owner. The officer has plainly stated -- he had no way of knowing whether he was dealing with the perpetrator, the homeowner, a hostage, or what. Both the black and hispanic cop were outside the house and did not see the exchange. Cops tend to be loyal to a fellow cop so its not surprising their reaction. The media has asked other cops how they would have reacted in such a situation. The responses were as varied as the numbers asked. It really depends on someone's personality. From what I remember, Gates had been on a long flight from China.....I am sure he was tired, jet lagged and frustrated. The cop was pushy. That's all it took for an explosion.Frankly, I think both men over reacted and the situation escalated. But there is no evidence, whatsoever, that the officer overreacted. He arrested a stupid ass professor in his own house. With all the overcrowding in jails, how frigging ridiculous is that? Yes, the cop overreacted.
