OK, I just read the police officer's own report from thesmokinggun.com. You're right, the police officer did indeed figure out early on that the man he encountered was probably not a burglar.

But I'm right too. Prof. Gates was acting like an arrogant jerk and was pretty much asking to be arrested. Must have been a long trip he returned from.

Z, one more thing to consider is this. Prof. Gates probably got very far in his life by playing the race card over and over again. This incident is no different. He has everything to gain from making this a national issue.

What does Sgt. Crowley have to gain from this, besides now being branded a racist cop and probably having no chance to ever advance in his career?
