The Vestal Virgins were honored and protected in Roman culture. Their continued chastity was considered essential to continued well being of the Roman state. They presided at ceremonies and lived a life of chastity until they were released from their vows in their 40's.

Vestal Virgins who broke their vows did not fare well. They were walled up in underground chambers near the Colline gate. The reason was, it was considered a sin to spill the blood of a Vestal. The Romans resorted to the artifice of walling off a fallen virgin in the catacombs, thus being able to say they did not actually put her to death.
