I generally agree with you. Many cops do a great job and most cops show up to work and do an adequate job. FWIW: In my neighborhood, most of the kids went to college. The two neighborhood bullies went into the service and then the police department. They were still bullies but they had uniforms, guns and night sticks.

Most of these cops are high school graduates and many of them have training from some type of police academy. In many towns in small town Jersey, at least in Bergen County, require college degrees. But they are paid far too well. Part of what is bankrupting the budgets in smaller municipalities are police salaries. Far too much spent on that portion of the budget, means other portions suffer, some badly.
