I didn't say they were not selling. But I expect it to fizzle out. That is not just a 1 billion subsidy, they will fund more if it runs out before 1 Nov. Unless perhaps there is a lot of cheating going on (mostly by the dealers). But saying there is only 1 billion makes the idiots buy now without thinking. Not that all are idiots many really want the smaller car and are ready to trade now. The point was that they could have done much better with, for example two or three thousand dollar rebate but you only have to improve a passenger car by 2 MPH, and the dealer doesn't have to dump the car, which means you also get the trade in value. The dealer can honestly resale the car. The glut of used beater cars (and a few partially restored) on the market will depress the lower end of the used cars pushing the lower value ones into the dump. Those people who are selling their new cars and buing beaters have a larger number of good beaters to buy helping them pay off their debt. The net result is more people buying cars and improving the economy a lot more than the current subsidy. Like you I believe just doing a $1000 dollar tax cut to everyone, car or no car would be even better. But if they want to get gas guzzlers off the road then I would think this would go a lot further. For me to take advantage of it I need to sell my truck which is going to take a while, and trade in the Taurus for a four cylinder truck. Hope they don't run out of the 3 billion set aside before I do. To tell you the truth I don't know if I want to do that. If they would make it just a two GPM improvement for cars and one for trucks I could actually find a vehicle I want. As it is I probably will forget about it and save for the vehicle I want, which gets worse gas mileage than the Taurus, but better than the truck.
