"You go to Phoenix or Dallas, yes it would be very hot there, too, but they have more of a system in place to deal with it." Let me tell you it really sucks. Right now, I am hearing sirens......fire engines, ambulances etc.....we have been hearing them day and nite since the heatwave started. We haven't had rain since May so everything is dried out and ready to catch fire. On top of that, there has been a cut off low lurking in Eastern WA that refuses to move so its not only hotter than a witches' t*t but its humid too......a very abnormal occurance here. Add to that, only 15% of households have any form of AC. I have a portable AC unit in my bedroom........the only person on my street. Most everyone is sleeping on porches and in backyards. Last nite, the temp did not go below 70º.........that is the first time that's happened since they began tracking temps in Seattle..........the last 100 years? The highest temp in the history of Seattle is 100º. That is expected to be broken today. But here is the clincher....Seattle has what is called natural AC.......its a phenomenon peculiar to the west coast. When temps get really high inland, a sucking action is set up and cool marine air eventually floods the coastal cities. So typically a heat wave lasts about 3-4 days and then cool marine air floods the metro area. Typically temps drop 20-30 degrees in a matter of hours. However, this time there is a thermal trough out of CA that is particularly strong and refuses to budge. So we have had temps over 85º....80 and above is considered a heatwave in Seattle......since Friday. So this is Day 6....well beyond the normal 3-4 duration..........and now they are saying temps may not go back below 80º until next Wed. If true, that will be a disaster for Seattle. I have not complained much because of what TX is going through but for us, this is as bad for Seattle as what's happening in TX.
