RW, > "Playing the race card" implies that I don't really believe it, that it's just an argumentative ploy.

I think Prof. Gates is playing the race card, even though he really believes that he was arrested just because he was black and the cop was white.

The race card is played over and over again because people who do get what they want. Hence they believe a lie, that many of the troubles they face in life are racially motivated.

I think you are sincere in your belief that the obsession over Obama's birth certificate is racially motivated. I also think that belief is a lie, but what good is it to say, "Well at least the 'birthers' are equal opportunity conspiracy theorists?"
