There's no denying that McAllen is an outlier - but the fact is these physicians are playing the game for-profit hospitals have perfected. They have become a politically convenient story - a caricature that's helping paint all physicians as fraudulent abusers.

I don't know of too many hospitals like that one that are entirely based on physician ownership - and the data is that most of the recent 25-30% price (not utilization) increases are in markets with salaried physicians.

A significant part of the story, I think, is the influence of special interests and how unlikely we are to get real reform - politicians are more likely to pursue politically feasible proposals
