The trying not to fail approach may have been a minor tactical error but putting on a "D.C politics-as-usual" show may well be a strategic blunder.

That sums it up very well. Quite a contrast with the Sotomayor nomination which I thought was handled very well. If the Reps hadn't had that one quote to pick on, she would have sailed through untouched.

As a freshman senator, Obama never had to get down and dirty in the congressional horse-trading world. I suspect he is learning a lot in a hurry. And we know from experience that he doesn't tend to make the same blunder twice.
