Sure there are unnecessary surgeries going on.

Some entire classes of surgeries are unnecessary - like most plastic surgery. And like sex change operations - which I understand are to be included in the government plan.

There are way too many caesarean deliveries I understand and fear of lawsuits is what drives it - thank you John Edwards and company.

I'm sure there are other examples.

I don't believe though that doctors are pushing unnecessary surgeries on patients for profit.

Many procedures have been discredited in studies but are still performed.

Really? Many? Doubt it, but would listen if you know of examples.

There is an entire class of surgery called "elective" surgery. So I guess there are some.

But I don't think physicians, generally, recommend surgeries THEY DON'T BELIEVE are effective.

No surgeries that leave folks no better off or even worse off?

This is going to happen as a by-product of doing surgery. Can't be avoided.

Many procedures have been discredited in studies but are still performed.

I don't know about "many". I'm guessing your thinking about bypass surgery or the use of stents, since you have mentioned those. The obvious one is C-sections, because there has been a lot of debate about that.

But you cannot expect the entire medical community to drop everything and change its method of treatment just because a study suggests it should.
