Yes it turned my stomach as well,.

as a student, more than 20 years ago, I saved a little, and took out a loan for a used VW-Audi car, ... that traded at like $1500 and had a good chassis etc. It helped me travelling outside the city where I had a job. And well, money was hard to come by, then.

Later when the engine gave up, I sold the scrap to someone else who actually replaced the engine and continued to ride it a couple of year. In all, it had run some 16 years and a good 200,000 miles.
