My father was willing to risk my life, and his, and went to the other side of the world "Because Hitler had to be stopped". Of course he didn't do it single-handedly and after a year or two, the USA joined in [when Japan made it untenable for them to remain neutral, making money by supplying materiel]. He spent 4 years over there, which is a long time to be away from home, living in a tent, with shells flying around making one's clothes dirty and truck leaky. Personally, I do NOT think he should have put my life at risk like that. The pay rate was poor, his WWI hero cousin was in prison for speaking out in public against WWII [on pacifist theological grounds], the benefits to him were questionable and I might not have been here to tell the story. Yes, war is just part of the DNA winnowing process, but it's quite a dramatic one, all at once, which is why it gets so much attention rather than individual bad luck and merciless natural consequences of decisions taken by individuals. By the numbers, war isn't really all that big a deal. Of something like 10 billion people who lived in the 20th century [hmmm, I wonder if that's about right - not far off and good enough for government work], only about 100 million or so met their end through official military conflict. Heck, even with garden variety murder thrown in, it's not all that much more. That's only about 1%. The other 99% also died [well, not all of us have done but nasty rumour has it that your days are numbered and some have even suggested I might not be immortal]. Given the spread of DNA, war is a gradual winnowing process in the modern world. With the much higher birth rates of centuries gone by, with women starting to have children in their mid teens and 10 of them each [for those who survived to an old enough age], there was a requirement for a LOT more territorial genocidal conflict as tribes competed for hunter gatherer, and later, agricultural rights. Maoris made a literal art form of killing and eating competing tribes, shrinking the good heads, especially those with good tattoos of chiefly status. Contraception and hybrid grains have meant far less genocidal conflict, with obesity talked of as a bigger problem than starvation. Now, the Super-Colony is on the march. Regular armaments are useless in this latest battle for supremacy. The tentacles are already wrapped deep into and around China. ElM is wrapping up Angola. Hong Kong is a done deal. Mqurice PS: A soak in a hot bath was a great idea during a nasty, cold, rainy, overcast, muddy and windy winter's day. 36 degrees and 98% humidity is a bit much even for me = 33 of each is more my liking.
