I tried to return my old chicken bones to get a new chicken, and the gov won't pick up the difference, same with my old tv. Why can't I can't I do that, why only cars ?

That part wasn't done as well as it could've been (well, maybe it couldn't have been, given the politics), but aside from the fact that it is getting some less-efficient cars off the road, putting a million American-made fuel-efficient cars on the road also makes it more socially accepted to own one. I mean, back in the '90s and early '00s, the biggest reason people were buying SUVs was because other people had them. I mean, that's why I considered one about ten years ago. It seemed like the socially acceptable thing to do, particularly when I was spending a lot of time with kids whose parents were a lot wealthier than mine and could buy them the cars of their choice. -Z
