ALL THE SYSTEMS WORK GREAT WHEN YOU AREN’T SICK. And most of the time most people aren't sick. The sicker you are, the greater the risk of death or disability – that’s where the rubber meets the road. And that’s where the private US system shines like a diamond. When I was a young doctor, a lot of my older colleagues pooh-poohed HMOs – “My patients would never put up with that”. And they were right. But what they missed is that HMO policies were sold by the millions to people who weren’t patients at all, and who didn’t plan on becoming patients. Of course, when they DID become patients, in the fullness of time, the HMO Health Club membership wasn’t so important anymore, and the restrictions on getting to see real doctors became VERY important.
