I think the graph is bullshit.

The parties were not that far apart in the 90s. The Contract With America proved that.

I think ideological distances are hard to measure but the two parties were not as close as you seem to think in the 90s. The Rs dogged Clinton all through those years and criticized nearly every move he made. The dems definitely felt alienated.

The real differences between the parties came in November 2000 when the Democrats tried to steal the presidential election and were furious that they failed to do so.

That's where you're wrong.........it really started under Reagan. All that talk of the silent majority.........the attacks on Dukakis when he ran.........the claims made that Dems/liberals were not as patriotic and as true Americans as the Rs. It wasn't as big back then.......Reagan was not that divisive. But it picked up speed in the 90s and came to a crescendo in 2000. The handling of the election in FLA was very poorly done and sowed the seeds for the current mess we are in.

While some would argue the Ds have always put politics ahead of the country, there is no doubt whatsoever that since Nov 2000 the Ds have been focused on acquisition of power more than they have on doing the right things for the country.

You are myopic when it comes to your view of the Rs. Until you and other Rs begin to own your role in this mess, the schism between us will grow and worsen. The prognosis is not good......even as members of your party are trying to do the right thing.

Reagan and both Bushes were able to work with Democrats. Today's Democrats are farther to the left than ever and are consumed with hatred for anyone not on the left.

Howard Dean is the spirit of todays Democratic party:

"I hate Republicans and everything they stand for."
