Woods Takes Buick Lead Despite Some Wild Shots
_______________________________________________________________

August 2, 2009 -- Tiger Woods drove onto adjacent fairways twice on the back nine, hit a cup of beer in a spectator’s hand, was rattled by a bug and was relegated to shaping some shots around trees and under branches.

He still managed to shoot a seven-under-par 65 on Saturday in the third round of the Buick Open in Grand Blanc, Mich., giving him a 17-under 199 total and a one-stroke lead over Michael Letzig (68), who double-bogeyed the last hole.

“The whole idea of the game is put the ball in the hole, and I did that,” Woods said. “But as far as controlling my ball, I didn’t do that.”

Woods opened his first tournament since missing the cut at the British Open with a 71 on Thursday.

When he was eight shots behind the first-round leader Steve Lowery, Woods said he could not make up ground in one day at Warwick Hills.

It took him two.

Woods roared back into contention with a 63 in the second round and took the lead Saturday.

He moved into a tie for the lead with Letzig at 17 under with a 33-foot birdie putt at No. 17.

Woods pumped his fist and shouted “Yeah!” The traditionally rowdy gallery roared so loud he could not communicate with his caddie, Steve Williams.

“It was pretty exciting,” Woods, who is making his ninth Buick Open appearance, said. “The people here have been absolutely incredible, so supportive of this event over the years. That’s one of the reasons why we love coming here.”

Woods has a 35-1 record on the PGA Tour when he has the outright lead after 54 holes.

At No. 5, he stepped out of his stance and kicked a bug that he later acknowledged led to a loss of concentration and a poor tee shot.

At No. 7, his tee shot caromed off a cup of beer that was in a fan’s hands and led to some friendly banter.

MATTHEW LEADS BRITISH OPEN

Catriona Matthew opened a three-shot lead over Christina Kim at the Women’s British Open at Royal Lytham and St. Annes Golf Club after a one-under-par 71 in the third round.

Matthew, who is playing 10 weeks after giving birth to her second child, bogeyed two of her first four holes but recovered with three birdies to finish at four-under 212.

The defending champion, Jiyai Shin, shot a 68 to tie Ai Miyazato for third place at par.

Paula Creamer recovered from two straight 74s to shoot a 70 and climb to a share of seventh place.

Michelle Wie, who is trying to earn a spot on the United States Solheim Cup team, carded a 74 for a total of 223.

FUNK GRABS SENIOR OPEN LEAD

Fred Funk took a one-shot lead at the United States Senior Open in Carmel, Ind., after a four-under-par 68 left him at 13 under after three rounds.

Funk made a 20-foot birdie putt on the 465-yard, par-4 16th, taking the lead when Greg Norman bogeyed the hole to drop to 12 under.

Funk, Norman, Joey Sindelar and the 50-year-old amateur Tim Jackson held the third-round lead at some point. Sindelar and Norman are tied for second.

Jackson, the tournament’s surprise leader after the second round, stumbled. He shot a 73 that left him at 10 under, three shots back.
