<<Do you think I am naive?>> No, but I do think they could have expected a reapeat of '87, if not worse, 26 hours ago, and very well could have made a decision to intervene. Like extremely often, immediate danger outweighs more distant potential problems, that's how people "make mistakes", which turn out to be mistakes later on, but at the time seem like a good idea.

And, I'm not so sure public would view Fed market support as a negative, they could get even more assured that market can go only up. It fits well with the prevalent publicity.
