What if the hikers are actually undercover cia? What could 3 English speaking very American looking young men possibly provide the CIA? Even if they spoke Farsi, it would be clear they weren't Iranian. Wouldn't it make more sense for the CIA to use Iranians? There's plenty of disaffected Iranians who would be more than happy to provide info to the CIA and in a better position to do so. Let's say they are with the CIA and have special skills. Surely the CIA has operatives within the country that could meet and escort them wherever.
