Mortgages were as much as 18%. Gas lines....unemployment....

I think 12% may have been the average.
Don't forget the homeless, lots of people homeless, and not the usual wino's and bums either. I recall tent cities to house people who were recently foreclosed. Not as big as those around NO and Miami after Katrina and Andrew, but I recall a half dozen tents or so run by the Salvation Army or similar charity.
