If Lincoln had lived, he would have taken 'us' back as friends, and if an idiot southerner hadn't killed him... there wouldn't have been the impulse to punish... you are right... it is different. yes, when I moved to CA, even though I had lived with black people and had been raised to see all as the same, I was called both prejudiced by 10 year olds who'd never met a black person, and told I was 'stupid' because of my accent. so be it. taught me something. and I had a mother who could explain it to me in a way that kept my head level... but here we are... yes, the North sees Alabama as trash, even when their racism is horrid, as well. blahblah. And Alabama is angry and feels put upon. It is stupid. and futile. At least you see that yes... he marched to the sea and burnt all in his path, and left farmers who had no stake in anything destitute, and women without husbands to work their farms alone... and they'd done no one any harm... never owned a slave, just wanted the fak to be left alone to raise a few crops. the whole war was between the money class of the north and south. but that is another story. now is what it is, and the legacy left to us. btw, yes... richer. the north made sure the south never got rich again. again... another story. the south also made its choices over the decades. it was only john quincy adams who realized that to raise the income of the south would change the region... as we as a country realized about japan and germany.
