Dr. Lustig made it very clear that fructose, sucrose and alcohol were much more detrimental than glucose, starch (which I believe is directly converted into glucose) or lactose because of differences in the insulin response and in the hepatic metabolism. More of the glucose and lactose ends up in glycogen storage which is benign (in fact necessary for life) while a good portion of the sucrose, fructose and alcohol goes directly into the production of the small LDH that promotes arteriosclerosis.

It got complicated, but that is the way I understood it. I will listen to it again.
