Humble Carl,

I wish that INTC could choose their growth rate. I'm sure they would choose to grow much faster. Unfortunately, even in monopoly situations, you are limited by market growth (which you manipulate to maximize profits). I am not so sure that AMD is going to be a speck anytime soon. Yes, they can't manufacture their way out of a bag, but they still will be trying to sell product. They eventually will get yields up at 233 Mhz. This will give them a presence at the low end of the market which is the fastest growing.

The bottom line is that INTC will not grow faster until they find a way to steer people to the Pentium II. I'm hopeful that Deschutes will allow them to price the part aggressively vs. the Pentium MMX and K6 (in the $200-300 range), give them better margins, and create a performance gap.

Richard

Re: Does anyone know somebody that have bought a non Pentium PC lately? humble carl

Carl:
I can't say that I know anybody, other than myself, that has bought a computer recently. Of course, mine is fully Intel equipped, motherboard and CPU. <g>

At work, there are quite a few people with aging computers. When I explain to them that there will be no revolutionary changes in the next year and a half (as I see it), they remain skeptical, convinced that something new is coming down the pike to make the PII's obsolete instantly.

One person is looking to buy, and is using some catalog from a company named Tiger to shop with...they sell a lot of Cyrix and AMD machines, and their price differences are on the order of $250 between an Intel and non-Intel machine, so he may buy a non-Intel machine. I told him he should get up to date prices, since catalogs go to press a long time before they hit the street, and prices are falling fast.

But right now, the market seems slow for the average folks...even a person with a 486 DX2/50 is "waiting and seeing," how she can do that, I don't know.

Cheers!
Rick

Afraid so. They were so happy with their K6 they were recommending it for a multiple purchase (for a non-profit educational group). I have to admit I asked that they stick with INTEL. For good reason, not just so investors can profit.

So far, no purchase. It will be interesting to see what happens.
