1998 I went to Sweden for two years but that stint ended up lasting only 15 months. I was with Ericsson and we had a newspaper that among other things advertised internal positions.

I was taken aback because nothing that I was seeing there had any relationship with real work.

There were guys called “Solutions Managers”. Others were “Product Managers”. I knew about those type of positions and even researched them. What I discovered was that people needed to be employed to justify a new dept. which would justify a new boss and the perks and so on.

It was a big film set. People would meet. Hold workshops, had tasks but they were not useful for anything Ericsson was developing, marketing selling and implementing.

It was totally absurd. I said: Ericsson can fire 50% of the work force and still function well. It actually did going down from about 106.000 to about 50.000 or so.

It transpire now is that fuelled by the tech bubble and the hot market for mobile money was pouring in com gusto. So the pseudo-jobs were being doled out left and right. I was disgusted bvy that I left with before my stint was supposed to end and returned to pole climbing which is where real things happens.

Do not regret my stint out of the God Forsaken countries. People were decent and tolerant. The infrastructure was excellent and the cars were good. Food was boring though.
