Seagate Introduces First Travan NS 20 Tape Drives for PC Servers and Workstations
Hornet(R) NS 20 and TapeStor(R) Travan NS 20GB Solutions Offer Up to 20 Gbytes of Storage, Hardware Data Compression and Read-While-Write Verification
COSTA MESA, Calif., Oct. 29 /PRNewswire/ -- Seagate Technology, Inc. (NYSE:SEG), the leading manufacturer of Travan TR-4 tape drives, today announced the latest addition to its extensive Travan line with the introduction of the Hornet NS 20 and its retail counterpart, the TapeStor Travan NS 20GB. Both Travan Network Series drives feature up to 20 Gbytes of capacity, hardware data compression, and read-while-write data verification, making them the ideal backup solution for NT workstations and the growing PC server market.

''With outstanding data integrity, industry-leading reliability, and important features like read-while-write technology and hardware data compression, the Hornet Travan NS 20 drive is built to protect the data on small PC servers that departments rely on every day,'' said Kevin Perry, senior director of Marketing and Business Development for Seagate Tape Operations. ''Just as Seagate led the way with the first TR-4 drives, we are the first company to announce a Travan NS 20 solution. Seagate Hornet Travan drives and TapeStor bundled solutions continue to fill the backup needs of the fastest-growing class of servers in the marketplace.''

The Hornet NS 20 tape drive has a backup capacity of up to 20 Gbytes with a 2 to 1 compression ratio and up to 10 Gbytes in native mode. The drive is the most reliable in its class with a Mean Time Between Failure (MTBF) rating of a proven 330,000 hours at a 20% duty cycle, the highest in the industry. The Hornet NS 20 offers backward compatibility with Travan TR-1, TR-3, TR-4 and TR-4 NS cartridges, assuming tapes are formatted with the same software.

''The introduction of the Hornet NS 20, backed by the Seagate name and Seagate's presence in the OEM market, lends credibility to Travan NS technology as this technology moves full-fledged into the server arena,'' said Fara Yale, director and principal analyst, Dataquest. ''Dataquest is currently forecasting PC servers to grow from 2.3 million units in 1998 to 3.6 million in the year 2001, and Travan NS 20, with its robust features and low-cost makes a lot of sense for systems in this high-growth market.''

The drive requires infrequent cleaning by the user due to a combination of the drive's design and TR-5 NS media. The Hornet NS 20's bi-directional heads increase tension between the media and read/write heads and prevent contamination caused by dust and other particles. The media is coated with an aluminum oxide which effectively repels and removes any other contaminants that may be present.

The Hornet NS 20 is one of the fastest TR-5 products available with a data transfer rate of up to 2 Mbytes per second. The drive uses a SCSI interface drive and incorporates Seagate's FastSense feature which optimizes backup time by allowing the tape drive to throttle its speed up or down to match well with the computer system's resources.

The Seagate TapeStor Travan NS 20GB is packaged for retail customers and is bundled with the Hornet NS 20 drive and Seagate Backup Exec for NT Small Business Server software which was designed to protect data in Windows NT servers with two to 25 clients. This easy-to-use, seamless solution includes a disaster recovery feature that will restore the server operating system, configuration and data. Both the TapeStor Travan NS 20GB and the Hornet NS 20 are backed by Seagate's two year warranty.

Seagate is currently the worldwide market share leader for TR-4, a technology co-developed with Imation. Seagate was first to market with a TR-4 drive and first to produce a TR-4 drive with an ATAPI (IDE) interface. Seagate produces its Travan drives in its new manufacturing facility in Singapore which commenced operations in July 1997.

The Hornet NS 20 and the TapeStor Travan NS 20GB are expected to be available to OEMs and the distribution channel by first quarter 1998. For additional sales information customers can call 800-626-6637.

Hey everyone,

I just got a gander of a spec comparison of the coming 9GB LP drives icluding SEG, IBM, QNTM, WDC, and Fujitsu and SEG has the highest areal density except for Fujitsu. Also, SEG has the highest transfer rate over everyone (by about 5%). WDC has the lowest performance and their product is a 6 platter drive istead of 5 platter like all the rest.

SEG's coming back, fast.

Regards,
