Borders were also defined by natural barriers such as mountains, rivers, oceans, deserts, tigers. People lived off the land which was the foundation of their existence. Local social integration was crucial to survival against the genocidal tribes just over the horizon or across the river. Now, millions of people are swishing around the world in airliners, with anywhere to anywhere being just a day or two of travel. Nearly everywhere is within the range of a single A380 flight. Miscegenation is on a grand scale now. Eskimo and Zulu are no longer separated by impossible distances. They might meet in Toronto. They can certainly communicate via cyberspace across continents and use information from anywhere. Bill Clinton pops over to North Korea, collects a couple of women who he takes home. The miscegenated daughter of one wsa there to meet her. North Korea is no longer impossibly distant from New York. Hordes of people owe their livelihoods to cyberspace. Umpty million depend on it to deliver their essentials. None are outside its domain now. Those who are not directly dependent feel the results in the hinterlands of Afghanistan, Alice Springs, Argentina and Alaska. Hearts and minds tend to follow cash flow. With my livelihood from cyberspace, that becomes my first loyalty. My food comes from anywhere on Earth, not the market gardeners next door, or my own garden, as it did just 50 years ago. Blessed are the Geek, for they shall inherit the Earth. It's tough to escape a domain name server these days. We are constantly suffused with geostationary emanations everywhere.
