The trend everywhere is for farm sizes to increase (economies of scale) and the number of farmers to decrease. This trend accelerates in bad times, when the big guys snap up land the little guys are forced to sell. In the US agricultural land prices would have to drop drastically to reverse this trend and make possible a big increase in the number of farmers. More likely is the creation of a new serf class - unless, of course, socialist measures are enacted to make land available to people with no savings.
