My late father used to let me go through his change every night and I still have the coin collection that resulted from those searches. I remember the excitement of finding one of the more commonly issued Indian Head pennies. I always had to give the coins back. Before he died he gave me a small very worn gold coin that someone had accidently given to him when he was shining shoes (at the age of twelve or thirteen) during the early days of the Depression. Given the family circumstances at the time (no money, an abusive, alcoholic father), it was a miracle that he was able to hold onto the coin. It is one of my most prized possessions.

My father got a GED after he dropped out of high school so that he could go to work and help support his family. He was always a registered Republican, as was my mother, who tended to more vocal about her political leanings. My father was a very quiet man and I sometimes suspected that he voted a Democratic ticket, but didn't want to tell my mother. He was a hard working man who didn't get the grease off his hands until he retired.

Being registered Republicans in Chicago during the 1950's meant that my parents frequently got called for jury duty and at least twice a year our garbage didn't get picked up.

Insomnia makes me ramble.
