I do not find that graph conclusive for establishing that Reagan was the root cause. That trend was in motion and accelerated as Reagan took the reins. His irresponsible supply-side voodoo greatly exacerbated the situation, but he did not create it.

I'll say one contributing factor was the unlocking of mortgage debt into a new massive bond market of sliced and diced tranches of joe homeowner. Look to Eisenhower for recognition of the path we took and when.
