They now have 37 classifications of land that may be withdrawn from staking or have reason for its title to be challenged by other interested parties. i.e. anti mining forces or SIGS. In the old mining law, widely copied worldwide, there was only one classification of land that could be withdrawn from staking. Mining rights took precedent over other land rights. In spite of this, and because of the remote nature of mines, their minimal footprint, and the strict environmental regulations that have existed in Canada since the 1930's, there were never any real conflicts or complaints about land use by mines, or environmental problems. Granted there was the odd bad example. Not that many, surprisingly. The only one I would point to where I took umbrage was the Sherman Mine due to its skirting of normal tailings pond practices. This was due to graft, not bad policy. 90% of mines, when they close leave no tracks so to speak. They are almost always unfindable within a few decades, despite the earlier lack of laws in the earlier part of the century requiring removal of all surface structures and purposefully returning all the land to natural state. It will return anyway in fact. I can testify to this have had the job of finding old mines. People take the stuff away anyway because it is valuable, and nature's reseeding efforts for the most part cannot be excelled. Politicians interfering in the mining business because it is an issue they can kick around due to the ignorance of the populace, have succeeded in chasing away foreign enterprise and domestic alike, under the guise of protecting the environment and being progressive. They view mining as a sunset industry, with neandrathal character, and lacking in benefit to the economy. Their mining laws and general policies are thinly disguised attempts to move on from being diggers of the earth and wresters of metals. I wonder if they stepped back and looked at an even more primitive practice, farming, and its ancient pedigree, and being the progressive sorts they are an disliking pollutions and excess land use counter to nature, if they could do without that. Sacred cows must be challenged at all times. No sense becoming too hidebound. It is clear, farmers are dragging us down. Their heads are stuck firmly in the past when man depended on silly things like grains, meat, and vegetables to live. We are past all that. We are space age and must now be looking at either farming this low level work out to people in foreign countries who are less educated, or develop synthetic foods. I hear Lever Bros. are making great strides in this area. Sex is next. At best a crude and primitive practice of our ignorant forebears. It is high time we became more progressive in that area. Maybe that is why they are moving into gay marriage. We are learning. EC<:-}
