Gold is indeed a uniquely unattractive long-term investment, particularly in the United States.

Well as I am sure you know it's outperformed most investments in the past decade as it did in the 70s. So their definitely seem to be times when it's a good investment. Holding it from the early 80s to the late 90s was obviously a very bad investment.

As for the future..? I am not sure.. I've sold of some of my physical gold this year.. but I am at a loss as to where to reinvest it.

Some gold bugs are hoping gold will act like it did during the 1930s and they are in for a serious disappointment.

Well it's already served it's role better than most holdings for the past decade, but that is of course ..past performance.. etc..

If you believe we are in for protracted deflation, then yes I believe gold would not be a good investment. It went up in the 30s because of a government declaration which I doubt will ever be replicated.
