If you are a supporter of single government payer, why would the public option be so important to you?

Should be obvious. I think single payer, and to a lesser degree a public option will lower costs.

But no legislation which doesn't address tort reform and the massive costs of malpractice/defensive medicine will even meet the laugh test.

So you want the federal government to take over that function from the states?

Here in Florida we have tort reform, and virtually no malpractice lawsuits. Yet we still have what you call defensive medicine... and what others call over testing to make the most of an asset (an insured patient).
