re: updating flash cards It's sort of a user choice. You can connect to the terminal remotely and drive around the file system that lives on the flash card, adding or deleting as you wish. (We support a simple copy operation to move files onto the card.) It's sort of tricky to describe to people, and I suspect either the user or the IBM folks just weren't aware of the capability. It also assumes the terminal is turned on, and sometimes in the middle of the night that's not true. You also have the potential problem if the flash doesn't work after the upgrade. Whoops. They may have just looked at the problem and decided that for the few times they would do this it's just easier to burn a card locally, verify that it is good, then send it. Double insurance. The card has actually been tested, and if it still fails, the site has the old card to fall back on. After some thought, I'd probably do the same thing.
