As I keep saying, this natural gas oversupply is terrifically good news for tar sands projects. In some respects, those projects represent conversion of methane to gasoline, not just the use of gas to heat the bitumen (whether mined or in situ). The hydrogen in the methane makes possible the process of converting the long-chain paraffins in the bitumen to lighter fractions.

As I see it, the only real risk to tar sands is ecopolitical, with emphasis on the political part. Canada at any time can either tax or expropriate this natural resource.

>>Shocking turnaround in North American natural gas supply - import to export<<

Meanwhile, the new REX (Rockies EXpress) pipeline will help replace lots of imported east coast heating oil with domestic natural gas from the Rocky Mountain states...

The Rockies Express Pipeline is snaking through 13 Ohio counties, including this section in Perry County, in the Crooksville area. The 1,679-mile project is divided into three segments and will transport natural gas from the Colorado and Wyoming area to the Upper Midwest and Eastern United States when completed. The pipeline is expected to be completed in mid-October and in service by Nov. 1. (CHRIS CROOK/Times Recorder)

The Rockies Express Pipeline compressor station west of Philo is a $35 million investment. Located on Irish Ridge Road, it is expected to provide permanent jobs, as well as the hundreds needed to build it. (CHRIS CROOK/Times Recorder)
