Re: "Basically all agreed it would be much more costly in every way than VM."

Guess we probably SHOULDN'T have put the Af-Pak War on the back burners for the past seven years then, huh?

When policy allows one's enemy - (in this case: Al Qaeda and Tali allies...) - the time and freedom, succor and support for rearming and regaining of strength... from the 'Great Airlift of Evil' and on down to today... is it ANY WONDER that the fight still continues?

Or that it's needs more then a bit of renewed attention and focus now?

Change is *exactly* what the new military and 'soft power' focus is all about, after all. (And with American troop deployment in Iraq rapidly scaling down right after the new year begins, right after Iraq's elections in January, pressure on our military can also begin to come down... because, although some will be redeployed to Afghanistan to help secure the place, many more will be rotating homeward at last.)
