BeefAmerica says recalls 168,000 lbs ground beef
CHICAGO, Oct 29 (Reuters) - BeefAmerica Operating Co said it has initiated the recall of about 168,000 lbs of ground beef produced October 21, after a sample was found to be contaminated with E.coli O157:H7 bacteria, the company said.

BeefAmerica president Robert Norton said no illnesses related to the beef have been reported. Most of the beef remained at the distribution level and had not reached stores or other end users.

Janet and all: E.coli is a surface problem; it's not like a burrowing worm. What happens at the processing plant is that a bunch of different cuts of meat and fats (some of which ARE contaminated with e.coli) are thrown into a vat-like thing and then all ground up together. In the grinding process, e.coli is deposited throughout the ground meat.
E.coli on steaks and roasts is cooked off, but in ground meat, it can live in the inner-most areas of the patty. If the patty is not cooked well enough, e.coli lives.
Ozone can be used to decontaminate meats when in the "vat", prior to grinding, or in many other areas of the process. Some say that it should be used throughout the process to ensure food safety.
By the way, the same holds true for chicken and pork, even hotdogs.
How's that for "food for thought"?

Janet CycloPPS is in the process of designing the equipment necessary to kill nearly all of the infectious bacteria for whatever kind of processed food or meat you might want to eat. The machinery for hamburger will obviously have to be different than that used on say chicken. The real bottom line is that it will work. Does this mean that no one will ever get an E. Coli infection again? Of course not. But the likelihood of it happening with a rare hamburger disinfected with ozone will be reduced immersurably. This is the kind of disinfecting treatment that consumers will ultimately demand in order to protect their health. It means big bucks for OZON and it's shareholders. Time will prove me right.
